As part of recent provincial changes, HRM is moving forward with adjustments to the Halifax Charter’s Minimum Planning Requirements. These amendments aim to reduce restrictions on residential development, addressing the urgent need for housing in our city.
While accelerating development is important, it’s equally crucial to ensure that these changes support responsible, community-focused growth—not just fast-tracked projects that overlook long-term sustainability and public interest. Thoughtful planning must remain a priority.
The deadline to provide feedback on these changes is, Monday, February 24. You can review the proposed amendments and submit your input here.
Provincial Push for Stronger Mayoral Powers
In addition to these planning changes, the Province is also considering granting the Mayor greater authority to override bylaws, which could shift decision-making power away from community voices and elected council members. While efficiency in governance is important, this approach risks sidelining the thoughtful, community-driven planning that Dartmouth Cove and other neighbourhoods need.
If you oppose the push for stronger mayoral powers, now is the time to act. Contact the Premier and your MLA today to tell them that community engagement—not unilateral authority—is the best path forward for Halifax’s growth.
Let’s ensure that development is done with the community, not around it.
